Comment: There are links on this website that make science interesting and exciting even for a person who is not deeply interested in science. Science is revealed in skateboarding, baseball, hockey and grilling meat to name a few areas. Real scientists doing real science can be observed through links on this site. An excellent educational tool, as well as an interesting visit to a website.

Title: Science World

Comment: This website provides interesting information and good links on all the sciences as well as mathematics. There are links to many sites that provide experiments and solutions as well as interesting history of science like biographies of famous scientists. Links are numerous making it slightly difficult to find specific information, but the vastness of information on the website makes it a valuable tool for any student.

ECOLOGY AND EARTH SCIENCE

Title: National Geographic: Wild World
Level: HS
Comment: This collaboration of the National Geographic and The World Wildlife Fund provides detailed information about 867 different ecoregions in the world. To find out about a region simply click on the map and a pop-up window will supply both text and images about the region. Clicking on the map while holding left mouse key down will allow you to zoom into a smaller area.

Title: Natural Regions of Alberta Canadian Site
Level: C&U
Comment: This site offers readers a quick look at the different natural regions of Alberta. The information is easy to read and not in great depth, but it is a good introduction to Alberta’s natural regions. There are also pod-casts available to anyone who has RealPlayer, or is willing to download it.

Title: Alberta Naturally Canadian Site
Level: C&U
Comment: There is some interesting information on Alberta and the environment. This site does not look at Alberta through rose coloured glasses though. Endangered species, pollution, poverty and other like topics are covered in this web page that manages to talk honestly about Alberta.

Title: Geography 4 Kids

Comment: This site has easy to find and easy to read information on ecology and earth science. The page can seem like a giant ad for Google at times, but there is good information to be found. Some of the pages have video links, and as long as the computer uploading those videos has the right program the user will benefit from the interesting video.

Title: Canada’s Polar Life Canadian Site
Level: C&U
Comment: The site provides information on Canada’s Polar Region. Information is presented in easy to read text, as well as in audio. Maks the Muskox is a guide for this web page and does a wonderful job of keeping a viewer of almost any age entertained and educated.

Title: Aquatic Introduction Canadian Site

Comment: Information on aquatic life is presented in easy to understand language on this site. There is nothing flashy about this page, no interactive links, no videos, just raw data found through relatively easy navigation.

BIOLOGY

Comment: This outstanding multimedia site provides excellent animations of a variety of cell processes.

Title: Biology 4 Kids
Level: ABE
Comment: This site provides an interesting and interactive introduction to Biology. Although the site is called biology 4 kids, the site author notes that it is for everyone-the content is not childish. The site author encourages advertisers to advertise on his site but these ads don’t interfere with the content.

Title: Tour of the Basics
Level: ABE
Comment: Information on this site is presented in an exciting and relatively simple manner. DNA, genes, chromosomes and more are presented in interesting tutorials. The site is titled tour of the basics and although the information is not necessarily basic, it is some of the introductory information to be presented on genetics and does a good job of introducing the topic.

Title: The Biology Project

Comment: This is a good website on biology. The information is presented in an interesting and easy to read manner. The site claims to be working on a better biology dictionary, but for now, some terms are difficult to comprehend with no easy way to find their meaning. The site map is an excellent way to maneuver around the site and move through biochemistry, cell biology and chemicals & human health.

Title: Internal Structure of a Neuron Canadian Site

Comment: This site is dedicated simply to the neuron. Information is presented in a straightforward manner, and links make it easy to find specific information. The information is technical but appropriate for the content, and there is a quiz allowing users to test their knowledge.

Title: DNA From the Beginning

Comment: Interesting videos, original presentation of information make this website an excellent resource for information on genetics. Videos require specific software, but it is provided on the website. It may take a while to view the videos, but this is an excellent web page. A great educational website.

PHYSICS

Title: Canadian Space Agency Canadian Site

Comment: Space enthusiasts will enjoy this official site of the Canadian Space Agency. One of the best interactive feature is the virtual visit to the John H. Chapman Space Centre.

Title: NASA-Features & News
Level: ABE
Comment: This is a good site to educate students from grade five to college on a variety of science topics. The latest NASA research articles are posted on this site, as well as audio links to some of this information. There are also links for educators to find resources, and for students to come up with excellent learning activities in science areas that are of importance to NASA and NASA researchers.

Title: Hyper-Physics

Comment: This website makes excellent use of concept maps to outline physics topics. Most physics topics are covered on this page and can be linked to quickly from the first page. Topics from high school physics to university physics can be found on this page and the concept maps make many of the topics easy to understand for the learner that likes to have big ideas laid out and linked for them.

Title: Physics & Astronomy

Comment: There is recent information on many different physics and astronomy news stories. This site is best suited for someone with a keen interest in science who is looking for new information or trying to get their questions answered. There is a section on the page that allows users to send in a question and have it answered by a variety of scientific minds.

Title: Tech Topics

Comment: This is a very entertaining and informative website on electricity. Students can use this to read about electricity, but more importantly, there are activities that allow students to see electricity and experience it through good experiments. There are some household supplies that are needed for a lot of the experiments, but many are also done without leaving the computer making this page valuable to a distance education learner.

Comment: This outstanding Physics site will be invaluable to any student studying high school level Physics. There are many opportunities to learn in multiple formats and through different interactive media. Highly recommended!

Title: Mr. Clintberg’s Study Physics Canadian Site
Level: HS
Comment: The principle strength of this site is that it was designed by an Alberta teacher to support the study of Physics 20 and Physics 30. Several of the videos are very instructive and the “Note-a-rific” sections will be very useful for studying for exams.

Title: High School Physics and Chemistry Canadian Site

Comment: If you want to do some creative procrastination while studying for Physics-this site is for you. Although a bit difficult to navigate-the section called “games” is worth looking at especially if you are a visual or kinesthetic learner.

CHEMISTRY

Title: World of Chemistry

Comment: This is a huge engine with links to numerous pages on all of the sciences and mathematics. Virtually any topic can be found on this site although it does take some skilled searching simply because of the vastness of the site.

Title: The ChemCollective

Comment: The strength of this website lies in its interactive activities. Students can explore a murder mystery or other activities that are fun to do and effective learning activities. Teachers and students would both benefit from this chemistry website.

Title: Chem 4 Kids

Comment: This site is intended for junior high students, but deals with material that any student learning about science can understand. Basic information on all the elements, the different states of matter, and atoms are examples of simple and interesting topics covered on this page.

Title: The Periodic Table

Comment: The periodic table of the elements is featured on this page. There nothing fancy about the page at all, simply click on any element and a page full of information on that specific element will come up. There are many links that do not work, or take a while to load which makes the learning on the page more difficult.

Comment: Videos, chat rooms, chemistry experiments. this website has some interesting and fun learning activities for introductory chemistry. Information is also presented well in the form of two separate textbooks that have complete access online. A worthwhile and fun website.

Title: Introduction to Chemistry

Comment: This website is essentially a text book summed up in a webpage. The information flows in an easy to read manner and order. Although it is composed of mainly text, there are some quizzes at the end of each section for review. It is a good introduction to chemistry.
